How To Set Up 2FA On Facebook With Authentication App

Facebook implements two-factor authentication (2FA) as a measure to curtail hackers access to user accounts. This allows you to set up 2FA on Facebook with the Authentication App. But how do you turn on 2FA on Facebook with the authentication app? On this page, we explain the various steps you can use to set up two-factor authentication on your Facebook account using an authentication app.

How to set up 2FA on Facebook with Authentication App

There are two ways to set up 2FA on Facebook with the authentication app. This can be done via the Facebook web browser or the Facebook mobile app.

Using the Facebook Web in Browser

To set up two-factor authentication on Facebook via Facebook Web in your browser, follow the steps below:

Log in to Facebook Account

  • Go to www.facebook.com and login with your Facebook account details. In the top-right corner, click the arrow icon and select the Settings and Privacy option. Go to Settings and select Security and Login.
  • Next, scroll down to the Two-Factor Authentication section and click on the Edit button. When you turn on two-factor authentication, you’re asked to choose either a security key, SMS codes, or a third-party authentication app as your primary security method. Choose the third-party authentication app option.

Install a Third-Party Authentication App for Login Codes

When you log in for the first time from a new device, you can use a third-party authentication service like Google Authenticator or LastPass to generate login tokens that help Facebook confirm your access.

Go to the app store and look for Google Authenticator or LastPass. Install the third-party authentication app on the device via which you regularly access Facebook. There are other free authentication tools that function similarly to Google Authenticator.

Once you’ve installed the app, launch it and tap on Get started. The app will require you to either Scan a QR code or Enter a setup key.

  • Now, go back to Facebook, click on the ‘Authentication app option, a small window will open indicating a QR code on the left side.
  • Take your smartphone, open the authenticator app you just installed
  • Tap Scan a QR code and scan the QR code using your camera.

Alternatively, you can use a setup key to set up 2FA on Facebook with an authentication app. All you have to do is enter the setup key manually. The setup key code is displayed on the right side of the window in your browser. It is a six-digit code with an expiration date. Enter the confirmation code that you see on your app, and you are done.

Using Authentication App

To set up 2FA on Facebook with an authentication app in a mobile app, follow the steps below:

Launch Facebook App on Your Moble Phone

This procedure is applicable to both iOS and Android devices. The first step in setting up 2FA on Facebook with an authentication app using the Facebook mobile app is to launch the Facebook app on your mobile device. If you are using an iPhone, click on the Menu icon located in the bottom right corner of the screen. But, for Android users, the menu is in the top-right corner.

Then, scroll down and select Settings & Privacy. Go to the Settings option and tap on it. In the new menu, scroll down to the security section and select Security and Login for iPhone; for Android, select Password and Security.

Next, scroll down to the Two-Factor Authentication section and click on the Edit button. When you turn on two-factor authentication, you’re asked to choose either a security key, text message (SMS) codes, or a third-party authentication app as your primary security method. Choose the third-party authentication app option. Press Continue to proceed and follow the same procedure indicated in the first step.

Click on Done to finalise the process. Now, you’ve successfully set up 2FA on Facebook with the authentication app. Facebook will notify you for a code whenever there’s an unauthorised login from a new device or browser.
